Will look to keep wickets in hand while setting target: Nair
Having won the last two of their three matches so far, the Delhi Daredevils are ahead of their opponents, the Mumbai Indians (won two off five games) on net run in the IPL 2016 points table. The Zaheer Khan-led team will have to once again punch above their weights when they take on the star-studded Mumbai Indians at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday, April 23rd.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Karun Nair said, “We have momentum on our side and Mumbai Indians are a good side, they are the defending champions, so whichever team plays well on the day will win. We are just concentrating on our process and we will give it our best on the ground and the result will take care of itself.”
The Daredevils, who beat the Royal Challengers’ Bangalore in Bengaluru have been going through methodical and rigorous training sessions in the sweltering Delhi heat over the past couple of days as they prepared to take on the Rohit Sharma-led team in their fourth match of the IPL 2016
.
Asked about their preparations for the MI attack, which is amongst the stronger bowling units in the tournament with the likes of Mitchell McClenaghan, Tim Southee and Jasprit Bumrah testing the oppositions, Nair said, “I think the preparations are the same for every game. I don’t think we prepare thinking about the opponent. We just prepare as to what we need and what we need to be concentrating on.”
While discussing their young line-up, the batsman said, “The good thing is all of us are young and we want to improve every day. Everyone is looking forward to make most of the opportunity and are very hungry to do well for the team, so it is good that we are very young and the intensity is also very high when we are fielding.”
Asked about his approach while looking to set a target in the ongoing tournament where the results have been in favour of the chasing team, Nair said, “You have to go over by over. Just keep wickets in hand is what I would do (while setting the target).
“For me depending on the situation, I bat according to the situation. I look at the situation and change my approach,” he added.
“It’s just that in this tournament probably the batsmen have gone for too much batting first and have probably fallen behind. As the tournament progresses you will see the balance will shift again,” he elaborated.
Elaborating on the success acquired while chasing, Nair stated, “I think you can put it down to teams being smarter over the years. They have come to a certain strategy that they know how to chase, when to go after which bowler. I think the teams are chasing really well. In the past years, chasing has been a problem for every team. Every team has really worked on that. Probably that’s why teams are winning chasing.”
Speaking about the conditions at the Kotla, he said, “We bowled really well and got wickets upfront and we didn’t get the pressure go so. I think you have to give credit to our bowlers and it was a good wicket to play on,” while reflecting on the win against Kings XI Punjab.
