In a rain-hit last-over thriller at the Wankhede Stadium, Gujarat Titans edged past Mumbai Indians by 3 wickets in Match 56 of the TATA IPL 2025. With this clutch win, GT climbed to the top of the points table, showcasing nerves of steel under pressure.
Mumbai Indians, asked to bat first, managed 155/8 in their 20 overs. Will Jacks top-scored with a fluent 53 off 35 balls, supported by Suryakumar Yadav’s 35 off 24. But frequent wickets stalled their momentum—Rohit Sharma scored just 7, and captain Hardik Pandya made only 1. Corbin Bosch’s late 27 gave MI a slight push. Gujarat’s bowling was disciplined, with Sai Kishore (2/34), Rashid Khan (1/21), and Prasidh Krishna (1/37) doing the damage.
Chasing the target, Gujarat lost Sai Sudharsan early for 5. Jos Buttler added 30, while skipper Shubman Gill anchored the innings with 43 off 46 balls. The chase was disrupted by rain multiple times, and after 18 overs were completed, the target was revised via the DLS method to 147 off 19 overs.
Needing 15 runs off the final over, Deepak Chahar began well, but a no-ball on the fourth delivery changed the momentum. Rahul Tewatia kept calm, scoring a crucial unbeaten 11 off 8 balls. He, alongside Arshad Khan, guided GT home off the very last ball of the match.
Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians Captain):
"Yes, definitely it's a tough way to go down. I think we fought really well with the total we had on the board. Most of the time we were out of the game but as a group, we kept pushing. It was a game of fine margins. It was definitely not a 150 wicket. We were short by 20-25 runs, maybe even 30 if we had batted better. Credit to the bowlers, they bowled in the right areas and kept fighting. I won’t say catches cost us the game; we were clinical in the field. I’d rather say the no-balls—my no-balls and even the last one. In my eyes, in T20s, it's a crime. It definitely hurt us today. Still, I’m really happy that everyone gave their 120% and fought hard. In the first half of the second innings, the ground wasn’t that wet, but later the ball kept getting wetter. The rain didn’t help—it’s not ideal to have so many stoppages. But at the end, we had to play, and we did."
Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans Captain & Player of the Match):
"Definitely. There was a bit of chaos when we came out to bat after the break, but it's great to get the win. The game plan changed during the powerplay with the rain—honestly, it felt like a Test match at times. We decided to play normal cricket, but with the interruptions, it wasn’t easy to maintain rhythm.
The wicket was a bit slow, so hitting through the line wasn’t straightforward. It was challenging overall. There were a lot of emotions—mostly frustration—because we were ahead at one stage, but then we lost four wickets quickly. Again, it felt more like a Test match out there.
In games like this, where you're chasing 150 and it goes down to the last ball, every contribution matters. Small things in the field really count. These tight wins push you forward in a tournament like the IPL.
It's not easy for Rashid to return from injury, but he's putting in the hard work. His performance today was a really good sign. As a team, we’re taking it one game at a time. We're not thinking about standings or top-four just yet—we're focused on building into a strong unit for the long run."
Match 56 of the TATA IPL 2025 promises a blockbuster clash as two top-performing sides—Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans—lock horns at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Both teams have secured seven wins so far and are separated only by Net Run Rate, making this a virtual shootout for a top-two spot on the table.
Gujarat Titans have been the model of consistency this season, maintaining a settled top order that has delivered game after game. The trio of Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler has formed the most successful top order of the tournament, collectively scoring 1,439 runs at an average of over 57 and a strike rate above 161. Remarkably, Gujarat remains the only team to have used the same three batters at the top in every game, underlining their clarity and cohesion. On the bowling front, Prasidh Krishna has been exceptional, leading the wicket charts with 19 scalps and proudly wearing the purple cap.
Mumbai Indians, after a shaky start, have bounced back in dominant fashion with six straight wins. Their revival has been led by the sensational form of Suryakumar Yadav, who has amassed 475 runs at an average of over 67 and a strike rate exceeding 172. What’s more impressive is his consistency—he has crossed the 25-run mark in every match he has played this season. Supporting him with the ball is Trent Boult, who has claimed 16 wickets and been lethal with the new ball.
With both sides in red-hot form and playoffs in sight, this clash could go a long way in shaping the final standings. The momentum-driven Mumbai face the ever-consistent Gujarat, and with stars on both sides, it promises to be a thrilling contest at the Wankhede.
IPL Stats at Wankhede Stadium in 2025:
Pitch Report- Ian Bishop and Matthew Hayden
This is a high-level clash here at the Wankhede Stadium. We are standing on pitch number 8. It's very very humid. Talking about the dimensions, it's 66 meters to the right, 5 meters shorter to the left, and 74 meters down the ground. There have been three games already on this surface. There has been a bit of weather around over the past few days, but today it’s been quite hot and sunny. RCB posted a big total when they played here, while CSK couldn’t post much. This wicket looks like a 200-plus surface. There may be a few showers tonight, so teams will probably look to chase. We also need to see whether there is any dew formation because both sides are high-powered batting units. For the bowlers, they'll need to be sharp and hope to come into the game early.
