At a jam-packed Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders survived a Riyan Parag storm to defeat Rajasthan Royals by just 1 run in one of the most thrilling games of IPL 2025! After winning the toss and batting first, the Knight Riders rode on Andre Russell’s unbeaten 57 off just 25 balls, decorated with 6 towering sixes, to post a formidable 206/4 on board. Angkrish Raghuvanshi impressed again with a fluent 44, while skipper Ajinkya Rahane anchored with a composed 30.

In reply in the chase, RR lost early wickets, slumping to 71/5 inside 8 overs, credit to the KKR spinners — Varun Chakravarthy (2/32) and Moeen Ali (2/43). But Riyan Parag, playing a captain’s knock, lit up Eden with a sensational 95 off 45 balls, smacking 6 fours and 8 sixes and despite a spirited effort from Shubham Dubey in the end KKR held their nerve to seal a nail-biting victory to boost their position on the table.

Riyan Parag, Rajasthan Royals Skipper: "I had planned to stay until the final two overs, but unfortunately, I got out in the 18th. Looking back, we could have explored better bowling options in the last six overs. There's no one to blame but ourselves; we should have closed the game. We weren’t clinical enough on the field, and we’re facing the consequences now."

Ajinkya Rahane, Kolkata Knight Riders Skipper: "It was a really close game, but I’m very happy. Winning by just one or two runs gives you a special kind of satisfaction. Gurbaz and Angkrish batted brilliantly, and that finishing touch from Russell was outstanding. The plan was to go hard in the powerplay and then stabilise the innings until around the 12th over. It’s never easy for a new batter coming in, so Angkrish and I kept communicating to take it deep. Fielding plays a huge role—saving 10 to 12 runs can make a big difference. A couple of good catches or a run-out can completely change the game."

Andre Russell is the Player of the Match

Andre Russell: "We all knew how important this game was. With four matches left, it felt like we were playing four finals. I'm really happy with our performance and getting the win tonight. I wasn’t too concerned about the dot balls early on because I knew I had time. It was a tough wicket to walk in and start hitting from ball one, but I’m glad I was able to find some boundaries at the end. You have to assess the situation, know which bowlers to see off and which ones to target. When I look at the last five overs, I see 30 balls. If I can face 15 of those, I believe I can get 40 runs with the power I have."

VENUE STATS:

The teams winning the toss have opted to field in 10 of the 12 games played at this venue since 2024, and the pacers have picked up 65% of the wickets. Previously this season, Lucknow had pipped Kolkata by 4 runs in the afternoon game played here, where over 450 runs were scored in the game. Will we see another high-scoring thriller today?

PITCH REPORT | Deep Das Gupta & Eoin Morgan:

“The dimensions, 66 meters on one side, 60 on the other, and 74 down the ground. Visually, you notice dry patches despite a grass covering most of it is dead. The big challenge for the ground staff would’ve been retaining moisture. Though it looks dry and dark, the surface is still holding together well. Unlike those classic ‘jigsaw puzzle’ Eden tracks that break up, this one seems solid. Might slow a bit early on and aid spinners, but overall a good batting wicket. Since sunsets are early here, chasing would be the preferred option as batting could get easier in the second innings.”

TOSS:

Ajinkya Rahane wins the toss and Kolkata will bat  first!
