In a poetic twist of fate, Match 39 of the season ended with a 39-run win for Gujarat Titans, who now storm to the top of the points table with a statement performance over Kolkata Knight Riders.
Batting first, GT were anchored by a sublime knock from captain Shubman Gill, who struck a classy 90 off 55 balls, blending elegance with authority. Sai Sudharsan (52 off 36) laid the platform early, and a late blitz from Jos Buttler (41 off 23)* ensured a towering total of 198/3.
In response, KKR faltered early with Siraj removing Gurbaz in the opening over. Ajinkya Rahane’s fighting fifty kept hopes flickering, but the GT bowling unit turned the screws. Rashid Khan outfoxed Russell for the sixth time in T20s, while Prasidh Krishna’s double blow in the 16th over crushed the chase.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi (27 off 13)* added some late spark, but it wasn’t enough as KKR limped to 159/8.
A clinical performance in every department, this win wasn’t just dominant — it was symbolic. Match 39. Win by 39. Gujarat on top.
Ajinkya Rahane | KKR Captain:
"To be honest, I felt 199 was a chaseable target. We did well to come back into the game with the ball. But while chasing a total like that, you need a strong start, and that’s where we’ve been struggling throughout this tournament. The pitch was a little on the slower side. When we were bowling, our goal was to keep them below 200, which we managed. But then, in the middle overs, we couldn’t quite string together the partnerships we needed. That’s another phase where we need to improve.I have no complaints with our bowlers—they’ve been executing really well.Fielding is one area we can control better as a team. If we can save even 15–20 runs in the field, it could make a massive difference in a game like this. Staying switched on throughout the innings is crucial, and the boys are working hard on that. This format is all about being brave. We can’t dwell too much on what’s happened in previous games. Whether we’re winning or not, we have to keep looking for small improvements—even 1% better can make an impact. As a batting unit, I tell the guys it’s okay to get out trying to hit a boundary. You’ve got to show intent and play fearlessly. We have some quality batters, especially in the middle overs, and I fully back them to step up.Great to see him doing well. He’s been batting really well, and today we decided to push the other batters to help bring the required run rate under control. The intent was right—we just need to execute a bit better moving forward."
Shubman Gill | GT Captain & Player of the Match:
"Very pleased with the result—two wins in a row is always a great feeling. Our focus is simple: play our best cricket and maximize scoring opportunities based on the pitch conditions. We talk more about how we can approach each surface rather than fixating on results. The idea is always to take the game deep and give ourselves the best chance to post or chase down a strong total. We were ahead in the game for most of it—but as we know, closing games is a different challenge. Top teams know how to finish the job, and that’s what I was expressing—those were the emotions of wanting to close it properly. It’s hard to play a perfect T20 game. There will always be a few things you wish you did better. For example, I feel we could’ve scored 10 more runs if I had stayed on. We also made a couple of unforced errors in key moments. But that’s the beauty of the format—even when you’re not playing perfectly, the best teams find a way to win, and that’s what we’re doing well as a group."
Ladies and gentlemen, buckle up—because Eden Gardens is about to witness a sizzler! In one corner, we have the Gujarat Titans—confident, clinical, and cruising at the top. In the other, Kolkata Knight Riders—a team with a point to prove, bruised but still dangerous, fighting for survival in the league. This isn’t just a game—it’s a battle of belief, bottle, and brilliance.
KKR, led by Ajinkya Rahane, have blown hot and cold this season. Rahane’s experience has anchored their innings repeatedly, but it’s high time the likes of De Kock, Russell, and Narine brought their A-game to the party. With spin-friendly conditions, Varun Chakaravarthy and Narine could be KKR’s trump cards—if they can crack GT’s power-packed top order.
Speaking of GT—what a juggernaut they’ve been! The Englishman Jos Buttler is in red-hot form, smashing an unbeaten 97 in the last match. Sai Sudharsan is piling up runs for fun and breathing down the neck of the Orange Cap leader. And Prasidh Krishna? Fourteen wickets and counting—he’s been venomous with the new ball and brutal at the death.
But here’s the deal—Eden Gardens is no stranger to drama. Two pitches have been prepared; the buzz is that one favors seamers and the other slow turners. The toss could be worth its weight in gold, especially with dew expected later in the night.
Pitch Report | Nick Knight & Eoin Morgan
"The defending champions are back at their fortress, and they’ll be desperate to pick up two crucial points tonight. Let’s talk about the pitch. This is a very Eden Gardens-like pitch. There’s grass covering, especially around the good length and short-of-a-length areas. That tells us we can expect a consistent bounce and decent pace tonight .From what we’ve seen in past games here, early swing is often a factor, particularly in the first couple of overs. So bowlers will want to make full use of that upfront. Now, if there wasn’t as much grass, we might’ve expected a bit of turn—but not tonight. The surface won’t offer much assistance for spinners, so they’ll be in for a challenge. All signs point to a high-scoring contest, but there could be movement with the new ball early on. The key for KKR is early wickets. They have to utilize the swing while it lasts. Guys like Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora must pitch it up, just as they did against SRH, and look for movement.GT’s top three have been batting deep into the powerplay. If KKR can disrupt that rhythm early, it’ll put pressure on GT’s middle order, who haven’t been tested as much. That could change the complexion of the game."
