At the eagerly awaited clash in Ahmedabad, Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to field first, marking his debut as Mumbai Indians captain. Gujarat Titans' opening duo, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill, got off to a swift start. Gill contributed 31 from 22 deliveries, B Sai Sudharsan compiled 45 from 39, and Azmatullah Omarzai's brief appearance yielded 17 runs off 11 balls. Bumrah's tight bowling was the highlight, ending the figures of 4-0-14-3. Rahul Tewatia's quick 22 off 15 helped set GT's score at 168/6 by the end of their innings. Omarzai early on rattled MI with the dismissal of Ishan Kishan for a duck and later Naman Dhir, who had started aggressively with 20 runs from 10 balls. Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis stitched together a promising 77-run partnership, seemingly steering Mumbai towards a comfortable chase during the mid-overs. However, Sai Kishore, managed to dismiss Rohit for 43 off 29 balls, signaling a shift in momentum. As the match progressed, GT's bowlers excellently exploited the conditions, elevating the required run rate and putting pressure on the Mumbai lineup, which faltered despite having power hitters like Tim David and Pandya. Mohit Sharma's spell of 4-0-32-2 and Spencer Johnson's crucial 19th over, where he claimed two vital wickets, underscored a remarkable turnaround by the Titans just as MI appeared in control of their chase. Needing 19 runs off the last over, Pandya's initial boundaries brought hope, narrowing it down to 9 required from 4 balls. However, Yadav's experience prevailed, ensuring a victorious start for Gill's captaincy tenure against his predecessor.

Hardik Pandya,  Skipper: "We were confident in our ability to chase down the 42 runs, yet, unfortunately, today wasn't our day as we lost momentum. Returning here is always a pleasure, the stadium offers a vibrant atmosphere, and with the stands packed, the crowd certainly witnessed an exciting match. We still have 13 matches to go."

Shubman Gill,  Skipper, "Absolutely, the team did exceptionally well to keep their composure despite the dew setting in. There was significant dew, but even then, Rashid and Sai bowled magnificently to keep us in contention. Mohit Sharma has been a phenomenal asset since joining us, continuing his stellar performance from last season. Our strategy was all about ramping up the pressure on the opposition. The fans have been incredible, turning up in full force, day or night, to cheer us on. Ideally, a total of 170 would have been more comforting, yet we fell short by 10 runs. Such is the nature of cricket. There were moments they seemed to be getting ahead, but striking the ball wasn’t straightforward here."

Sai Sudharsan is the Player of the Match:

Sai Sudharsan: "I feel it was slightly difficult in both the first and second innings. Because of the dew, they were able to play a few shots, but we pulled off a great game. I am just taking it as an extra opportunity to try and win a game for my team. After a few balls, I felt this is that kind of a wicket where you can go hard everywhere and wanted to build on the momentum. Too many great contributions in the second innings. As a batter, I found it tough when they took the pace off and our bowlers executed really well today"

Hardik, after propelling Gujarat Titans to remarkable heights, including an IPL championship and a runner-up finish while consistently leading the league table, now dons the Mumbai jersey once more. The Western Derby between Mumbai and Gujarat is set to become a fixture highlight, marking a riveting chapter in the IPL saga. In the wake of Hardik's departure, Gujarat appointed Shubman Gill as captain. Despite his scoring prowess, Gill steps into leadership. As both teams gear up, injuries have sidelined key players, including Mumbai's Suryakumar Yadav and Gujarat's Mohammed Shami, testing the depth and adaptability of their squads. TOSS:-

MUMBAI INDIANS GET THE TOSS IN THEIR FAVOUR AND DECIDE TO FIELD FIRST!

Hardik Pandya  Skipper : "We've decided to bowl first, considering the track looks decent and might improve with dew. It's great to be back, especially in Gujarat where I've had significant success and received immense support—very thankful for that. My cricket journey started in Mumbai, so it feels special returning. The team's been preparing for nearly two weeks, full of eagerness to perform. We've had excellent practice matches and sessions, and everyone's looking sharp. The squad's balance feels right, with four quicks, three spinners, and seven batters, ensuring we're well-prepared in all aspects. "

Shubman Gill  Skipper : " I'm truly excited to captain in a stadium filled with so many personal memories. Our fan support over the last few seasons has been a key strength, giving us incredible backing. Arriving a week early, I participated in a practice match and sessions, finding everyone in great form and fitness. Today marks the debut for GT of Umesh bhai, Spencer, and Omarzai, with several newcomers, like Sushant from the U-19s and Sai Sudharsan, expected to debut later this season. Everyone's showing promising form in our recent sessions."
