T20 could hurt fifty-over: David Saker

13th May 2008

David Saker, the assistant coach of the Delhi Daredevils team, thinks the success of Twenty20 cricket does not augur well for the 50-over format.

Saker says that the 50-over game might be hurt a little because of Twenty20 cricket, but is quick to say Test cricket is safe. He feels that every player is proud of representing his country in Test cricket; so the longer version of the game isn't in jeopardy just yet.

He was quoted saying, "I can't see Twenty20 ever taking over from Test cricket, but it would hurt the 50-over game, there is no doubt about that."

David mentioned that Vettori's departure for national duties has been a loss to his team, but the Daredevils' team management had already put in place plans to ensure his absence is not felt. Saker hopes the young players in the Delhi team can pick up and do as good a job as possible, but was quick to say it was going to be a tough job to replace a great performer like Vettori.

The Delhi Daredevils have one of the best bowling attacks in the Indian Premier League and young pacers like Pradeep Sangwan and Yo Mahesh have matured quickly to become an integral part of the pace department. Saker thinks that all the bowlers are performing well as a unit.

One of the very few men who think bowlers have a huge role to play in the successes or failures of teams in Twenty20 cricket, the former Tasmanian bowler feels it is generally teams with good bowling units who've done well in Twenty20 cricket

The Delhi franchise is a well-balanced team and has plenty of explosive batsmen in its ranks like Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhawan, AB de Villiers and Shoaib Malik. Saker said he is very happy with his teams batting set up and is satisfied with the efforts of his wards on the field.

Saker also pointed out that the IPL will help the Indian national selectors in recognizing and identifying young talent from across the country. Saker had this to say, "Every squad has got some good Indian talent. It's a matter of having a good look at them and try to give them a go in their respective teams."

The IPL has been a major success in its maiden season. David too concurs with that thought and said, "I think it's the first time IPL has come along, so things will be even better next year. I think the game is only going to go forward."
