Need a basic technique to play any format: Jackman

16th May 2008

Critics often slam Twenty20 cricket citing that it doesn't involve a great deal of cricketing skill but former England cricketer Robin Jackman, who is now a commentator and presenter at the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL), strongly feels the need to have a basic technique in order to play in any format of the game.

The Englishman feels that the IPL can be a platform for the youngsters to make it to the next level with the prerequisite of a fundamental skill suitable for all three versions of the game.

Elaborating his stand he says, "No matter what anybody says, you've got to have a basic technique to be able to play any format of the game. If you haven't got a good technique, you can't play Twenty20 cricket either."

Appreciating the performances of the Indian youngsters, Jackman expressed that they can only learn from the presence of internationally acclaimed players in their side.

"I have already seen some of the young Indian players. They have good techniques. They are learning a great deal. It's a great thing for them as they are getting to mix with the superstars of the game in the dressing room," he explained.

According to Jackman, tournaments like World Twenty20 and Standard Bank Pro20 Series (South Africa's local league) have had an impetus on the IPL. He further acknowledged the magnitude of the inaugural edition of the League.

"I think it is not only the World Twenty20 but also the Standard Bank Pro20 tournament that has created this atmosphere. I don't know how much this brand is new but it is bigger and greater because all the grounds have been choc-a-block while I have been here," he stated.

He is of the opinion that all the formats of the game can exist in the same space.

"I don't think any other format of the game will be threatened by Twenty20. There will be always room for Test cricket. I think it just needs to be monitored and I am sure it will be," he concluded.
